Shivampet Ruchita from Telangana will be the recipient of the prestigious Geeta Chopra Award for the year 2015 for bravery.
Ruchita was eight-years-old when she pushed two children out of a bus she was travelling in when it was hit by a train at a level crossing in Maisaipet in Medak district on July 24, 2014. She was selected for the act of bravery in saving two other lives. As many as 20 students in the school bus were killed in the accident including Shruti and Sharath, Ruchi ta’s brother and sister. Two years prior to the accident, Ruchitha from Medak district, had undergone a surgery to rectify a hole in her heart.
Another boy from Telangana, Sai Krishna Akhil Kilambi has also been selected for the 2015 National Bravery Award. The 15year-old Sai Krishna has been chosen for saving his mother from electrocution. Sai Krishna managed to turn off electricity supply in his house in Agapura in the city when his mother Prasuna, came in contact with a live electric wire while washing the floor of the house. He ensured that he did not step into the water as he turned off the mains supply in the house resulting in his mother’s life being saved.
Both Ruchita and Sai Krishna, will be among the children who will be presented with the bravery awards by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 24. The winners from the state will join winners from other states and take part in the Republic Day parade on January 26.They will also attend a reception by President Pranab Mukherjee in their honour.
