Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are working on action plans for smart cities based on three main principles of retrofitting, redevelopment and pan city components.
Officials said these are the main factors in urban development projects, which if executed to perfection, can give more weightage to entries.
All city wise plans will be evaluated in the second stage of the ‘city challenge’ competition for identifying the top ranking 20 cities during the next financial year. All the selected 100 cities in first round will present their smart city action plans before an apex committee in New Delhi on December 15. Warangal and Hyderabad from Telangana Visakhapatnam, Kakinada and Tirupati from Andhra Pradesh were selected in the irst round.
While retrofitting is about developing the existing areas hrough better water and sa nitation coverage over 500 acres of land, redevelopment s applicable for part of exis ing city with an area greater han 50 acres of land and mu nicipalities.
For instance, a new layout plan of the identified area will be prepared with mixed and use and higher floor-spa ce index.
Pan city components co uld be interventions like in elligent transport solutions hat benefits residents by re ducing commuting time and smart IT.
Overall, the focus will be on core infrastructure services like adequate and clean water supply , sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transportation, affordable housing for the poor, power supply , robust IT connectivity, governance, especially e-governance and citizen participation.
“We have prepared the DPR based on these principles and we are hoping that our cities will make to final 20 list,” K Kannababu, director, municipal administration of Andhra Pradesh, told TOI.
