PAST TENSE
1. SIMPLE PAST TENSE: ( past indefinite tense):
The simple past tense is used for a past action.
Example:
1. I saw the Taj Mahal in 1989.
( simple past form – v2 )
2. PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE :
The past continuous tense is used for an action
continued at some point in the past.
Examples :
1. It was raining at noon yesterday .
2. We were working at Warangal last year
( ‘be’ form + ING form )
3. PAST PERFECT TENSE:
The past perfect tense is used for an action completed
by a certain point in the past.
Example :
I had passed M.A before 1977
( ‘have’ form + past participle )
The past perfect tense is used for the first of 2 past
actions.
The train had gone before I reached the platform.
4. PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE:
The past perfect continuous tense is used for an
action continued up to some point in the past.
Examples :
1. A.K. Khan, a freedom fighter , passed away
yesterday. He had been ailing for some time.
2. I had been residing in Vizag up to 1997
( ‘have ‘ form + been + ING form )
